Lesbian Owls and A Grackle in Love

If that headline doesn't grab your attention, I don't know what will...So as for the owls, they are currently in egg laying season, making them VERY grumpy when you enter their cage. Unfortunately for Woodsy and Bubo (the 2 resident owls)...they are both female, and those their eggs tend to...well, not hatch into anything. None-the-less they still feel the need to try and kill all those who dare enter their cage. Buuut after a few weeks they get bored and start playing hockey with the eggs and the end up smashed :( Well, I suppose they could always adopt.

Also here is a video of my favorite visually challenged grackle. I think he may think we are a couple. He does a little dance when I come around and he keeps trying to give me presents..like pieces of the shavings...Emily, help me out here bird lady, do grackles give nuptial gifts?

Adorable.

More animal pictures soon!

Well a few quick updates for my adoring fans:

1. Chocolate party=AWESOME but exhausting and resulted in an entire day of...I'm going to call it chocolate de-tox. Also, Peter is back from Belgium and as I walked in the door coming back he handed me Belgium chocolate and I almost cried. At any other time I would have been delighted...and yet...I will still eat it...

2. Dara's flight coming back was also delayed for FOUR hours while they circled due to bad weather and played clips from the news...which was all about the recent plane crashes...lol good job.

3. Last week the neurologically challenged blue jay started singing for the first time ever. He sounded like he was immitating a combination of the finch and the puppy when she is whimpering/barking upstairs. To volunteer Melissa I said "awww, maybe he is getting better...oooor maybe it is his last hurrah...haha". The next day I found him stone cold dead in his cage...way to go me for my depressing prediction.

4. Today the weather was nice, however as I was walking out the door loaded down with trays of various breakable and scatterable things I did a face plant on the black ice. I then said some choice words which shocked the nearbye turkeys...but not enough to keep them from racing over and eating everything I dropped (edible or not). My favorite hawk also died over the weekend apparently :( I was really bummed...and also then bruised...and so I did what anyone would do and I sat in my deers cage and let him give me kisses til I felt better. Comfort is a universal language.

5. I have had the songs from Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog stuck in my head ALL DAY.

6. My nemesis is reality

That's all for now!

MYSTERY!

So for 2 days I thought something had eaten the turkeys because they didn't show up to harass me...and I almost, ALMOST missed them...and then they returned. And in celebration of their return they woke me up a few minutes before my alarm went off by pecking on my sky light and then as I walked out the door, one bit my ass. Awesome, I missed you too guys. Anyway, not a whole lot is going on at the moment. I had my job interview to work at a nature camp and it went pretty well I think. Also, all my stuff is officially in to UVM for my application, so yaaay. I am kind of jealous of my friends in grad school right now. I will admit to my dork-i-tude and say that I really enjoy school. Also I enjoy school more than shoveling poo. Anyway, about 2 more months of this and then I am done. One up side (other than the cool experiences with animals which I really DO appreciate) is that this has definitely gotten me in shape. However, I do not recommend it as an exercise program; I am cronichally tired, stressed, and I smell of Henry pee pretty much all the time. Hot. OH, also I forgot to mention that Dara took a short vacation this past week so it was pretty much just me running the show. Luckily nothing catastrophic happened, although I shouldn't say that since she is actually still not back (she comes back tonight at around 10) and I still have plenty of time to accidentally burn the place down or release all the animals. Oh ALSO, Peter just left for his short trip to Belgium tonight and currently I am in the span of time after him leaving and before her arriving...so I am REALLY running the show. Luckily nothing should be in dire need of attention at this time of night...but it's dark up here :( Anyway, my mac and cheese is getting cold, so I'm off!

You don't die of being uncomfortable....except when you do...

Just some brief updates about my life:

1. I am coming home again this weekend in order to interview for a summer job teaching 5 year olds about nature. SO EXCITED. Mom stop sending me job postings please!

2. An orange moped it is, K.J., and I will certainly get you one...if it is buy one get one free....I wish they had BOGO on mopeds...P.S., Meg want to go on an adventure to Salem this weekend?

3. When you wear different colored pants you are A CRAZY MURDERER! Just so you know. At least that's what the turkeys here think. I just went outside for a sec in my brown pants without blue scrubs on and the male turkey tried to chest bump me and attack with his scary velociraptor-looking feet.

4. A funny conversation from last weekend I just remembered (making the title of this post make sense):

Me: I have learned some things from this internship...liiike you don't die from being uncomfortable.

Sarah: Sometimes you do.

Me: Well....you don't die from lack of sleep

Sarah: Sometimes you do.

Me: You shouldn't stick your fingers in cages containing angry animals?

Sarah: Yeah ok, that one is true.

Next up on my list of amazing adventures:
- Warm weather = melting shit and new and interesting smells!
- Sarah's family chocolate party! (I have no idea what to make....but I DO have access to vast ammounts of things that look like chocolate but aren't....)
- A Kiss from a sea lion with Emily as a belated birthday present
- Eastern State Penetentiary with Laura and Mary!

If you are in Jersey, New York, Connecticut, etc, catch me now before I dissapear into Vermont!

Gratuitous picture of what the snow at the clinic looked like before it turned to slushy grossness:

One time I almost brought home a possum....

So I was GOING to write this awesome post making people guess which animal I had been talked into bringing home after my internship...but it turns out I will not be bringing anyone home : ( Partially because it really wouldn't be a great idea since I don't know where I'm going to be in the next few years....and also partially under threat of eviction from my parents...hmph. Well anyway, I was going to take Delilah, my little semi-paralyzed possum. She really would not have needed much care...and she couldn't like...you know...run away or anything. However, she is probably going to be taken by a fellow rehabber volunteer which makes much more sense. I'll miss her though. Although Henry still needs a home....just kidding mom and dad (OR AM I?!). On a serious note though, I do worry about what is going to happen with him. The other day Dara was telling someone about how he has bonded to me. She said his eyes follow me around the room wherever I go and he is calm when I am around (as opposed to on weekends when he apparently freaks out a lot)...So I am officially mommy to the saddest creature on earth...wonderful. I hope the next volunteer can bond with him but Dara seemed to doubt it since he will already be a full adult. OH and cute story; whenever I'm in his cage cleaning up whatever ridiculous mess he has made he licks my face and unties my apron strings by chewing on them. Adorable. He is getting a lot more skittish though, which I imagine must be horrifically frustrating for him, since a deer's instinct is to run, and all he can usually manage is a pathetic hobble/crash...Anyway, back to the ol' grindstone...or...poop stone...as it were...

p.s. Happy Birthday Laura!

P.P.S. But in more upbeat news, here is the moped I really want to get if I get into UVM!

That is...when I have some money...hm..I can dream though can't I? Should I go for the METALIC SILVER? the BAD BLACK? Or the METALIC COPPER? Based on alliteration alone, I might go with the bad black...

Gosh Darn it!

Facebook won't let me post my pictures from the weekend which was MAGICAL. I missed all my Drewbies :) Anyway, I will post them once I am home and using a non-ridiculous laptop...but here is a brief preview of the madness:

P.S. Thank you Emily for the flip-book-like montage of pictures of my face...maybe I will untag every other one so it looks really disjointed...

Anyway in animal news, we are all cleared out right now (relatively). The pigeons are gone, the vulture and a crow were released, and one of the squirrels left too. OH! And the gross possum went to a new home! I will miss her worms and poo....well no, no I won't, but at least she had a sweet temperament. It's nice now to have some extra time for the ones who need a little more TLC like Henry and Delilah. That's all for now other than this random picture of Dara and Peter's pomeranian puppy Penny (woo that's some good alliteration!). She greets me with wild enthusiasm every day, I can't believe I forgot to introduce her:

The End
